Three vehicle thieves were apprehended by Stolen Vehicle Recovery leaders, Tracker at around half past four this morning (May 23, 2007) after the vehicle they had stolen could no longer drive on the icy roads in rural Qumbu in the Eastern Cape.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a residence in Mpumalanga last night and driven to the Eastern Cape until icy conditions forced the criminals off the road.
"Our Tracker crews found the guys parked alongside the N2 in Qumbu, which had actually been closed due to the heavy snowfall in the area. It appears that they could no longer achieve proper traction on the icy road and were forced to stop.
When our crew caught up to them they were found huddled together, shivering on the backseat, using each other's body heat for warmth," says Tracker's Communications Manager, Gareth Crocker.
The men were all arrested and the vehicle will soon be re-united with its owner.
"As the only vehicle tracking company to enjoy a formal partnership with the South African Police Service, we're used to working with great support, but we can't ever recall the weather helping us out. It was only a matter of time until we caught up to them, but the cold simply fast tracked the recovery," explains Crocker.
