Travel Insurance Consequences of Volcanic Ash Crisis
South Africans with TIC policies, who are unable to travel abroad due to the disruption of flights as a consequence of the volcanic ash cloud over the UK and Europe, can either change their travel dates on their TIC policies or cancel their policies with a full refund.
TIC has taken the principled decision to automatically extend the policies of all TIC policyholders currently stranded abroad, who are unable to return to South Africa. This means that even if these travellers’ policies have already expired, TIC has extended their cover at no additional cost so that they are insured against risks such as illness, injury, lost luggage etc. to which they would have been exposed if TIC hadn’t extended their travel insurance policies.
George Novis, TIC’s MD, says, “This is an unprecedented incident and TIC, the leader in the travel insurance industry, fully supported by our underwriters, Santam, has made this decision as our paramount concern is with our clients, to ensure that they aren’t stranded abroad without full protection. We feel this is the correct thing to do so that all our clients will be covered for medical incidents and other insurance risks. We cannot leave them stranded without cover.”
Even though the cost implications of these decisions are significant to TIC, our ability to provide this travel insurance solution is quite manageable given our leadership position in the industry and our financial security.
