We win

07 November 2006 Angelo Coppola

Chalk one up to the man and woman on the street, as the KZN Department of Transport does an about turn.

It appears that while the wonderful people at the Department of Transport in KZN won't talk to the media, at least when they are trying to hide, they do sometimes talk to their constituency.

We can now report that the officials at this esteemed government department have relented and according to one of our sources the department issued an e-mail to their branches to the effect that contractors may in future do business with the broker of their choice.

So we win half the battle as the department has decided to keep the Durban broker on as their preferred supplier of insurance, but happily not the sole supplier.

Editor's thoughts:

* Vigilance is the key, if you spot something that is unconstitutional, illegal or unethical, report it. Don't stand by and do nothing- that is just as criminal. And that doesn't only refer to the industry. Look at daily life and take responsibility. Report illegal acts, of any nature. Someone is listening.

* This brings me to the issue of crime. While we struggle with the industry issues people are dying around us- and it has been reported in certain circles that more than 21 000 people were killed last year and this in a country that is at peace. The war in Iraq doesnt have as many casualties.
