South Africa listed Tracker Funds Awards (“SALTA”) for 2020

13 February 2020 ProfileData

First introduced in June 2018, the Annual SALTA Awards are now approaching their third event, which is scheduled to be held at the JSE, Sandton, on Wednesday 11 March 2020.

These SALTA awards look to reward the issuers of JSE listed Exchange Traded Funds for superior investment returns and tracker management over various time periods.

Investment Performance is measured by total returns (with all dividends and other distributions reinvested) over periods of 3, 5 and 10 years.

Tracking Efficiency which ranks skills in producing returns relative to the specific benchmark index tracked by the ETF is measured over 3 years.

Trading Efficiency looks to rewards ETFs for tradability i.e. the average ratio of the volume of units traded over the total number of securities in issue. This is also measured over 3 years.

Capital Raising – ETFs can raise fresh capital through the JSE, either through IPO processes or, if already listed, through the creation or redemption of securities to meet market demands. In this manner, more than R10,5 billion new capital was raised by the ETF industry last year.

The SALTA Capital Raising Awards recognise both individual ETFs and the issuing houses as a whole that have raised the most new capital over periods of 1 to 3 years.

In all, 20 SALTA Awards are made in various categories, using the above criteria. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the listing of the first ETF, the Satrix 40 ETF, on the JSE in November 2000, so the twenty awards made, is appropriate for this event.

The SALTA Awards consists of unique trophies for each winner, as well as framed certificates to mark the occasion. Although only in their third year, the SALTA Awards are highly prized by the local ETF industry and are often referred to in the advertising and marketing campaigns undertaken by the ETF issuers.

The Awards are made at a 30-minute ceremony, held appropriately at the JSE building in Sandton, Johannesburg, between 17h30 and 18h00 on Wednesday 11 March 2020. The ceremony is carried on a live webcast of the proceedings which can be accessed through a link on the SALTA Awards website (http://salta-awards.co.za/).

The SALTA Awards are organised and managed by four sponsors, all of whom provide services to the ETF industry in South Africa, but do not themselves issue ETFs, so are not conflicted in making objective assessments of the data available on Exchange Traded Products. The sponsors are: The JSE Limited, Refinitiv, Profile Data and etfSA.co.za.
