Last month the Milpark Education Student Chapter team were acknowledged for their hard work at the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) Student Development Awards. Held at the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, the awards acknowledge students who are excelling at their studies as well as seamlessly managing their other day-to-day tasks and work-life.
The team, which was formed barely a year ago, walked away with a total of four awards including the Best Student Chapter of the Year. Currently the smallest in size, The Milpark Education Student Chapter brushed aside competition from 11 other more established member institutions.
Woman of the Year and Most Promising Student Entrepreneur of the Year awards went to Oratile Hlakoana, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Investment Management. She is also the incoming ABSIP Milpark Chairperson, and when she is not studying, owns and operates a Bed and Breakfast Guesthouse called Oamogetswe, which translates to ‘You are welcome’.
Tebogo Kopele, the outgoing ABSIP Milpark Chairperson, took home the Student of the Year award for his contribution to ABSIP, ABSIP Milpark and social outreach engagements. As a third-year student doing a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Investment Management, Tebogo founded and chaired an educational non-profit organisation called Thuto Ke Lebone (Education Is Light). His organisation has adopted over ten high schools in the rural areas of the North West and provides career guidance, counselling and motivational sessions to learners.
Says Sandise Sibanda, Marketing Manager of Milpark Education, “We are very proud of these achievements, and while we are not very surprised by the result, this is just another confirmation of Milpark Education’s competitiveness and the quality of education that we offer.”
The ABSIP Student Development’s mandate is to promote career awareness and professional development initiatives targeted at the ABSIP student members. The aim is to better prepare students for the world of work within the financial services sector.
